According to the museum inventory, the heads with Inv. Nos 1, 2, 3 “received from Mehmet Tefik Bey. Found probably in the Yeni-Kapou.”
This female head of a hight 15 cm is made of white, fine-grained marble.
It is preserved together with a small part of the neck. Nose chipped, minor chipping in places. Back not fully finished.
The head is turned slightly to the left with thin nose and small eyes. The long wavy locks that frame the head are drawn into a braid at the back of the skull. Variation of the head of a Sphinx type of the middle of the 5th c. BC. Comparable to heads of statues of the early Antonine period. Dated to early 2nd c. AD
The heads with inventory numbers 1-3 are the first objects entered into the records of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki collection in the time of the first Ephor, Georgios
Oikonomos. The Yeni-Kapou (in Turkish New Gate) cited as the probable find-spot is the area of the Lete Gate in the city wall, where present-day Haghiou Dimitriou St. begins. This was the district to the west of the Government House, in the west part of the city, which had been the area of the sanctuaries.
The object is displayed in the temporary exhibition “For a flame that burns on [1821-2021]. Antiquities and Memory, Thessaloniki - Macedonia”
