Description of the programme
The European programme "Black Sea - Unity and Diversity in Roman Antiquity - BSUDRA) is part of the Joint Operational Programme "Black Sea Basin 2007-2013" and funded by 90% by the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.
The programme aims to create a cultural research network that emphasizes on protecting, preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Roman era in the Black Sea region, as well as Greece which is the bridge that connects the Aegean with the Black Sea. The participating partners in the programme are Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Turkey and Ukraine (until 2014).
The main participant for the Greek side is the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki with cooperating institutions, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Αlpha MENTOR, a company specialising on European Network management.
The programme reached the following goals:
- A joint temporary exhibition of 90 posters entitled "Roman Art and Culture - A common language in Antiquity", presenting the most important archaeological sites and monuments of the Roman era in the participating countries. The exhibition was displayed in Tulcea (Romania), Chisinau (Moldova), Batumi (Georgia), Sinop (Turkey), Thessaloniki (Greece), Varna (Bulgaria) and Sulina (Romania).
- The organisation of seven disciplinary meetings with topics that highlight the "common language" prevalent during Roman times in the wider Black Sea basin in terms of administration, arts, architecture, worship, as well as various aspects of daily life. The exhibition and the accompanying meetings aimed to inform the general public on the issues of cultural unity and diversity of the people who lived around the Black Sea and to reinforce the common elements in their cultural identity.
- The publication of a multilingual catalogue with informative panels (the electronic edition was also available on a digital disc).
- The creation of a website www.bsudra.ro for the programme's promotion.
- The organisation of a 10-day educational programme for new archaeologists (10 -20 July 2014) at the archaeological site of Ιbida-Slava Rusă in the region of Tulcea in Romania.
- The creation of a database for the monuments and the archaeological sites in the respective regions.
- The founding of a disciplinary union entitled "Research Centre for Roman Archaeological Heritage".
3RD WORKING GROUP (04/21 - 23/2014)

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki participates as a partner in the programme BSUDRA - "Black Sea - Unity and Diversity in Roman Antiquity" (June 2013 - June 2015).
The 3rd scientific workshop of the participant partners will be held at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, from 21 to 23 January 2014.
The inaugural event will take place on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 9:30 a.m., at the "M. Andronikos" hall. Institutional representatives of the agencies involved in financing the project, as well as delegations of the partners, will participate, representing all the involed countries.
In the opening event (9:30-10:45) which is open to the public, the programme and its actions will be presented in detail.

The third meeting of the programme BSUDRA - "Black Sea - Unity and Diversity in Roman Antiquity" (June 2013 - June 2015), held in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki from Tuesday, January 21 to Thursday, January 23 2014, has been concluded.
The programme has as main objective the creation of a cultural research network, focusing mainly on the protection, preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of the Roman era in the Black Sea region, as well as Greece, which is the bridge connecting the Aegean with the Black Sea.
The project which is funded by the European Union (Joint Operational Programme "BLACK SEA 2007-2013") and national resources, is coordinated for the Greek side by the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Other greek cooperating institutions are the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Alpha MENTOR, a company specializing on European Network management.
The inaugural meeting in Thessaloniki (21/01/14), was honored by the presence of the Macedonia-Thrace Minister Mr. Theodore Karaoglou, the Romanian General Consul Mr. Martin Ladislau Salamon, the Turkish General Consul Mr. Tugrul Biltekin, Bulgarian Consul Mrs. Borissova. The General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Mrs. Lina Mendoni sent greetings, while representatives of the European Center for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and the International Hellenic University, institutions active in research and promotion of cultural heritage of the Black Sea basin, addressed salutations.
During the launch event, which was open to the public, the director of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Mrs. Polyxeni Adam-Veleni presented the objectives and activities of the program. The meeting was attended by institutional delegations, representing the project partners: Tulcea County Council (Romania), Varna Regional History Museum (Bulgaria), Crimean Branch of the Institute of Archaeology, Simferopol (Autonomous Republic of Crimea - Ukraine), Batumi Archaeological Museum (Autonomous Republic of Adjara - Georgia), Free International University of Moldova (Republic of Moldova), Sinop Special Provincial Administration (Turkey).
During the partners' meeting (Wednesday 22/01/2014 - Thursday 23/01/2014) the progress of the project was presented and the following issues, related to the programme's activities, were discussed in detail:
- The organisation of a joint poster exhibition entitled "Roman Art and Culture - A common language in Antiquity" which will begin in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki on November 4, 2014 and will be accompanied by multilingual catalogue.
- The creation of a database that includes archaeological sites and monuments in the respective regions.
- The creation of a website to promote the programme.
- The organisation of scientific seven disciplinary meetings accompanying the exhibition in each country.
- The organisation of a ten-day educational programmme for young archaeologists in Romania during the summer of 2014.
- The organisation of a symposium entitled "The Roman heritage in the Black Sea" which will be held in Istanbul in the spring of 2015.
- The creation of an association called "Center for Roman Archaeological Heritage Studies" for the sustainability of the programme.
This collaboration which brings together seven neighbouring countries of the Balkan peninsula and the Black Sea aims to exchange experiences between the scientific, cultural and administrative bodies, in order to create durable cultural relations through joint actions. The cooperation will contribute to the promotion of the common cultural heritage, but also to a better understanding of the unity and diversity that characterize these areas and contribute to the creation of a particular cultural character.
The partners involved in the programme were guided in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and other archaeological sites of the city. They all expressed their satisfaction for the meeting results and their admiration for the rich cultural heritage of Thessaloniki.
SCIENTIFIC MEETING (02/18 - 20/2015)
The scientific meeting of the European programme BSUDRA - "Black Sea - Unity and Diversity in Roman Antiquity" (June 2013 - June 2015) will be held on February 18, 19 and 20, 2015 at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
The scientific meeting entitled "Architecture in the Black Sea during the Roman period", will be held on Wednesday, February 18th (16.00-18.00) and Thursday, February 19th (9.30-13.00 and 16.30-19.00) in the "Manolis Andronikos" hall. Seventeen papers will be presented by researchers from Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova and Turkey.
- All communications will be in English and French language.
- The color multilingual catalogue issued under the program containing 90 informative panels will be distributed.
- A certificate of attendance will be given to the participants of the scientific meeting.

Ιtinerant exhibition "Roman Art and Culture - a Common Language in Antiquity" under the European BSUDRA programme "Black Sea - Unity and Diversity in Roman Antiquity"

The opening of the exhibition "Roman Art and Culture - a Common Language in Antiquity" will take place on Wednesday, February 18 at 12.00. It comprises 90 informative panels from all countries participating in the programme, accompanied by an exhibition of 164 antiquities of the Roman period from the collections of the Museum.
The exhibits form a collecton of small and large fragments of the cultural koine that prevailed during the Roman era and constituted the continuation of the Greek world. These are objects deriving from sites in Macedonia and Thrace, areas with direct access to the Aegean and linked to the Black Sea through the Bosporus. They refer to all aspects of public and private life and constitute a small sample of the region's material culture.
We invite you on a voyage to the Black Sea, to meet the, unknown to many, archaeological wealth of the region, as well as the unity and the diversity of the people and the ideas around this hospitable sea.
