The Jews of Thessaloniki. Indelible marks in space

17 Sep 2011 - 17 Sep 2012

The temporary exhibition "The Jews of Thessaloniki. Indelible marks in space" was organised as part of the "Thessaloniki, Crossroads of Cultures" initiative of the Ministry of Culture, and within the framework of the 3rd Thessaloniki Biennale of Modern Art, funded by the Macedonia-Thrace 2007-2013 Operational Programme and co-funded by the European Union.

The exhibition presented the history fo the Jewish community of Thessaloniki - the largest community in Greece - as an "archaeological" exploration, from the Hellenistic era, when it is first attested, until its annihilation during World War II. The landmarks that show the religious, social, economic and cultural presence of the Jewish community serve as focal points.

Selected artefacts trace the age-old presence of the Jewish community in time and space of Thessaloniki: ancient funerary stelae, secular and religious garments, mementos of their private and public lives, photographs and rare archival material. The museum cooperated with the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace, the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the Museum of Macedonian Struggle, the History Centre of Thessaloniki and private individuals.

The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue in two languages (Greek, English).
