The bronze medallion carrying the bust of Athena, found in the excavation of the Dioikitiriou Square in Thessaloniki, is a masterful example of late Hellenistic art (mid 2nd century BC.).

The performance of Athena form stands out for its dynamism and intensity whereas excellent contrast is the peaceful form of Medusa that decorates the front of the goddess helmet.

Along with four other decorative bronze animal heads, depicting panthers and dogs were the decorative elements of a chariot. Surely this was a luxury vehicle designed for official ceremonies and parades.

This unique art object probably belonged to a prominent Macedonian partner or a member of the royal family.
