Α-ΠΟΛ(ε)ΙΣ

12 Sep - 29 Oct 2017

In the context of the annual event 'European Heritage Days' (22-24 September 2017), the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (AMTh) hosts, the installation Α-ΠΟΛ(ε)ΙΣ (non-city/cities) by the visual artist Anni Kaltsidou.

The installation Α-ΠΟΛ(ε)ΙΣ is a 5x5m floor-standing composition, consisting of white marble pebbles and clay casts hands in different sizes according to gender, age and the relationship between them: they are hands, as the artist says, of fathers, mothers, children, i.e. hands of families. Anni Kaltsidou agrees with the concepts of the celebration - POL(e)IS (=CITY/CITIES) - but at the same time she shows the polysemy of cities as places of departure and arrival, home and abandonment, communication and internal desertion, where every citizen is also apolis, i.e. a non-citizen.
