Dye identification on sculptures of the A.M.Th. Collection

06 Feb 2016

Many sculptures from the collection of the A.M.Th. preserve traces of dyes, which show that they used to be painted in antiquity.

Museum professionals of various disciplines cooperated for the identifications of these dyes (archaeologists, chemists, conservators, photographers etc.). Specialised techniques of photography were employed (fluorescence and reflected ultraviolet, and infrared) and the presence of inorganic pigments of mineral origin was confirmed through non-destructive analysis.
